Is MBBS Equal to MD in the USA?
An MBBS is a primary medical degree, but it does not automatically become a U.S. MD or medical licence. Indian and overseas graduates enter the United States as international medical graduates.

MBBS and the U.S. MD are both primary medical qualifications, but they are not the same named degree and an MBBS is not automatically converted into an MD. A foreign MBBS graduate is treated as an IMG. To train and practise in the United States, the graduate must meet current ECFMG requirements, complete the required USMLE pathway, secure residency and satisfy the relevant state licensing board.
Shortlist programmes only after checking ECFMG eligibility, clinical structure, budget and India fallback.
MBBS vs MD in the USA
| Point | MBBS outside the USA | MD in the USA |
|---|---|---|
| Degree role | Primary medical qualification in India and many other countries | Primary medical degree awarded by U.S. MD-granting schools |
| Graduate category in USA | International medical graduate | U.S. MD graduate |
| Automatic U.S. licence? | No | No—graduate medical training and licensing requirements still apply |
| Residency application | Requires applicable ECFMG/IMG eligibility | Uses the U.S. graduate pathway |
| Degree conversion | No general “MBBS-to-MD conversion” certificate | The school awards the MD directly |
How Can an MBBS Graduate Become a Doctor in the USA?
Verify the medical school
Check the school’s World Directory listing and the exact ECFMG Sponsor Note, including eligible graduation years.
Apply for ECFMG Certification
Complete the current application and primary-source credential-verification requirements.
Complete examination requirements
Meet the applicable USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 CK requirements and the current clinical and communication-skills pathway.
Build a residency application
Prepare specialty strategy, clinical experience, letters, personal statement and ERAS application according to current programme rules.
Enter the Match
Apply and rank programmes through the NRMP process. Passing exams does not guarantee a residency position.
Residency and state licence
Complete required graduate medical education, Step 3 when applicable and the chosen state board’s licensing conditions.
The route is competitive. NRMP reported a 56.4% PGY-1 match rate among active non-U.S.-citizen IMG applicants in the 2026 Main Residency Match. That is an aggregate outcome—not an individual prediction or admission guarantee.
Ask for a programme-level check covering ECFMG Sponsor Note, course structure, clinical exposure and NMC pathway.
Does Every Foreign MBBS Degree Qualify for USMLE?
No. A school being visible in the World Directory is not, by itself, a promise that every student or graduation year qualifies. ECFMG tells applicants to check the school’s Sponsor Notes tab. ECFMG also states that it does not recognize, accredit or endorse medical schools.

Can a Georgia MBBS Graduate Pursue Residency in the USA?
Potentially yes, but eligibility belongs to the individual and the exact medical school—not to Georgia as a blanket country label. Before choosing MBBS in Georgia, verify the school’s current ECFMG Sponsor Note, programme structure, clinical exposure and your target Match year.
A better selection approach
Choose a medically sound programme that supports India eligibility and builds strong fundamentals. A USA goal should be an additional pathway, not a reason to ignore NMC/FMGL requirements.
Start preparation early
Plan exam timing, research, clinical experience, communication skills and finances across several years. The medical degree is only the foundation of the IMG application.
Compare universities by eligibility evidence, hospital training, complete cost and long-term licensing plan.
Common MBBS-to-USA Myths
“Passing USMLE makes me a U.S. doctor”
Passing required exams is important, but residency selection, training and state licensing remain separate stages.
“Any WDOMS-listed university is approved”
Directory listing is not an endorsement. Check the ECFMG Sponsor Note and individual eligibility conditions.
“MBBS becomes MD after one exam”
There is no universal degree-conversion exam. An IMG follows the certification, residency and licensing pathway.
“One country guarantees a Match”
No country or consultant can guarantee residency. School choice, scores, application strength, specialty and visa needs all matter.
Build a realistic MBBS abroad plan
Share NEET status, PCB marks, budget and long-term country preference. ISA can help compare programmes without guaranteeing ECFMG eligibility, USMLE results, residency, visa or licensing.
Request Free Profile ReviewFrequently Asked Questions
Is MBBS equal to MD in the USA?
Both are primary medical qualifications, but the degree titles and pathways differ. A foreign MBBS remains a foreign medical qualification and does not automatically become a U.S. MD or medical licence.
What is MBBS called in the USA?
The usual U.S. medical degree is MD, while osteopathic medical schools award DO. A foreign MBBS graduate is generally classified as an international medical graduate.
Can an MBBS doctor work in the USA?
Potentially, after meeting current ECFMG, USMLE, residency and state-licensing requirements. An MBBS degree alone does not authorize medical practice in the USA.
Does MBBS convert to MD after USMLE?
No. USMLE is part of the examination and licensing pathway; it is not a general degree-conversion test.
Can I take USMLE after MBBS in Georgia?
Potentially, if the individual and medical school meet current ECFMG eligibility requirements. Check the exact World Directory Sponsor Note and eligible graduation years.
Is WDOMS listing enough for USMLE eligibility?
No. ECFMG directs applicants to verify the Sponsor Notes tab and all current eligibility conditions. Directory presence is not an endorsement.
Does passing USMLE guarantee residency?
No. Residency selection remains competitive and depends on the complete application, specialty, programme filters, interviews, Match results and other requirements.
